# Numbering and VAT rates

Change the prefixes on your job, quote and invoice numbers, and set the VAT rates you charge.

## Document numbering

Open **Settings → Document numbering**. For each document (jobs, quotes, invoices, credit notes, customers, sites, contracts and so on) you can change the **Prefix** and the number of **Digits**. **Next reference** shows what the next one will look like.

Numbers only ever move forward and are never reused. Invoices and credit notes are **Gap-free**. See [Why invoice numbers can't change](/invoices/invoice-numbers/).

## VAT rates and labour rates

Open **Settings → Finance**. Here you set:

- your **VAT rates** and which one is the default,
- your labour rate card, used by **Price from rate card** on jobs,
- quote validity, reminders and approval limits,
- invoice payment terms, bank details and the terms printed on quotes and invoices.
