# Approve and send invoices

Issue a draft invoice so it gets its number and is emailed to the customer, with an approval step if you use one.

1. Open the draft invoice and check it.
2. Select **Issue & email**.

The invoice gets its number, is locked, and is emailed from your company name (replies go to your company email) to the customer's billing email with the PDF. If the customer has no billing email, it goes to the contact on the first job. If that person switched invoice emails off in the customer portal, no email goes, and the invoice is in their portal.

Payment terms come from the customer, or 30 days by default.

## Approval

Invoice approval is off by default. If your company turns it on in **Settings → Finance**, invoices over the limit show **Submit for approval** first, and an approver chooses **Approve** or **Send back**.

## Need to change it after issuing?

You can't edit an issued invoice. Raise a [credit note](/invoices/credit-notes/) instead.
